Fees and Payment

  • ​Fees must be paid prior to submission and for entries into each category.

  • Entry costs £4 per poem / short story / flash fiction entered.

  • Payment by Paypal is preferred

Payment by Cheque or Postal Order

  • Send a cheque or postal order (pounds sterling only) made out to The Federation of Writers (Scotland) by post to Anne Clarke, 0/1 25 Craigmillar Rd, Glasgow G42 9JZ

Email Submission Process (Preferred)

 

Please send a separate email per competition category.

​In the body of your email, please include:

  • Name and Surname

  • Address

  • Email

  • Contact Telephone Number (The One Used in the Word Doc File Name)

  • Category

  • Titles of Entries

  • PayPal Reference / Chque or Postal Order Number

  • Consent for the Federation to process your personal data for the purposes of the competition in the email

  • Just copy and paste the line above to note your consent. 

 

Sending Your Entries as Attachments

  • Attach submissions for each category to your email to fwscompetition@gmail.com to arrive by midnight on 18th August.

  • Each entry must be sent in a separate word document.

  • Subject heading of email as follows: COMPETITION - [Category] – [Contact telephone number]

  • Email submissions containing combined entries for multiple categories will be disqualified.

  • Email entries will be acknowledged on receipt.

 

Postal Submission Process

Send two copies with a separate cover sheet entitled COMPETITION with the following, to Anne Clarke, 0/1 25 Craigmillar Road, Glasgow, G42 9JZ

  • Name and Surname

  • Address

  • Category

  • Titles of Entries

  • PayPal Reference / Cheque or Postal Order Number

  • Consent for the Federation to process your personal data for the purposes of the competition in the email

 

Postal entrants should supply their email address or enclose a stamped addressed postcard if they wish their entry to be acknowledged. Proof of posting does not mean proof of delivery.

 

Before submitting please check

  • Your poem is no longer than 40 lines (longer poems will be automatically disqualified)

  • Your flash fiction is 500 words in length or under

  • Your short story is over 501 and under 2,000 words in length

  • Your entry has no identifying details on it, except your contact phone number, otherwise it will be disqualified.

  • You have paid the correct fee for the number of entries submitted in each category.

  • Prose entries are double-spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman.

  • Poetry entries are single- or double-spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman.

Once any entry has been submitted and the fee paid, please do not contact the competition secretary unless the piece you submitted has been accepted for publication elsewhere or placed in another competition prior to 18th August which would automatically disqualify it.

Scots and Scottish Gaelic

  • Scots and Scottish Gaelic entries can also be entered into the open categories (poetry, short story, and flash fiction) and Scots and Scottish Gaelic categories concurrently, respectively.

  • Please include a translation, alongside the original, if entering Gaelic writing into the open categories.

  • If you wish to enter two categories with the same piece, payment for an entry into both categories is required.

 

The Brian Whittingham Memorial Prize

  • The highest-placed poetry entries in the Poetry (Open), Scots and Gaelic categories, will constitute the shortlist.

  • The prize is judged by those adjudicating the Open Poetry, Scots and Scottish Gaelic categories.

Please Note

  • No entrant may receive more than one prize in each category.

  • Entry is open: you do not have to be a member of the Federation of Writers (Scotland). 

  • You may submit an unlimited number of entries into each category, provided they are all covered with the necessary fees.

  • Work submitted must be in English, Scots or Scottish Gaelic. We cannot accept entries in other Gaelic languages.

  • Entries ​​must be your own work (no translations of others' work or poems which are 'erasures' of another's text).

  • No work submitted should have been previously published / broadcast / e-published or posted online in any form.

  • Entries will not be returned, so please keep a copy of your entry.

  • No alteration can be made to an entry once submitted.

  • The judges’ decision is final.

  • The judges cannot enter into any correspondence regarding entries.

  • The organisers reserve the right to withhold prizes in any category if the number of entries received is insufficient or if entries received are judged not to meet the required standard.
