JO GILBERT

Jo Gilbert is a spoken word artist and writer from Aberdeen. Writing in their native tongue of Doric (or North-East Scots) and English, Jo's work has featured on BBC Radio 4 show Tongue and Talk, in art exhibitions, installations and short films, as well as spray painted on a mural at Aberdeen Beach.

Their poem ‘Yon Hairy Stick’ originally commissioned by Aberdeen Art Gallery was included in the Scottish Poetry Library’s ‘Best Scottish Poems’ 2022

Jo was a finalist at the Loud Poets Grand Slam at Edinburgh International Book Festival in August 2023 and came 4th in the Scottish Slam Championships in 2024.

Widely published in journals and anthologies, Jo's debut poetry collection 'WTF is normal anyway?' was published in August 2022 by Seahorse Publications, which was nominated for a Scots Language award in 2023.

Past collaborations and commissions include StAnza Poetry Festival, Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums, Look Again Festival, the National Theatre of Scotland and several projects with Aberdeen Performing Arts.

Jo’s poem ‘Speirin’ was commissioned as one of the Scottish Poetry Library’s Burns Night Skies feature in 2025 and her second collection ‘The Department of Stuff and Things’ is due to be published in March 2026 with Seahorse Publications.
